Naby Keita has revealed that a chat with Jurgen Klopp and Sadio Mane, as well as his new sides recent performances was enough to convince him to join Liverpool.
Liverpool are enjoying somewhat of a renaissance under Jurgen Klopp, who despite not yet adding silverware to the Anfield trophy room, has restored the club to top four regulars and even guided them to the 2018 Champions League final.
Twelve months ago, they made a move to sign Guinean midfielder Naby Keita after his impressive season in the Bundesliga during the 2016/17 campaign, although RB Leipzig were reluctant to sell for any price. Even though he had a £48 million release clause which will become active on July 1 2018, the German club rejected offers of up to £80 million to do a deal a year early.
The Reds have since come to an agreement with Leipzig which will see him join the club this summer, and he will begin pre-season training on Monday at Melwood when the players who are not on international duty are due to report to begin preparations for the 2018/19 season.
Speaking to Liverpool’s in house TV station, Keita has admitted he cannot wait to get started, and what convinced him to move to Anfield:
“When you see how they performed last season it makes me want to do the same and to be a part of this team. I would like to be able to achieve a similar kind of season with them next season – but even better.
“I chose Liverpool because it is a team I watched often – and I also spoke a lot about it with Sadio [Mane]. He told me a lot about the team and the club.
“I also spoke with the coach, who told me about the project for the team and that motivated me to be here.”
