Kane: ‘Gutted’ to lose 50/50 game

England’s superb run to the World Cup semi-final ended in heartbreak last night as Gareth Southgate’s men slipped to a 2-1 extra time defeat to Croatia in the Luzhniki Stadium.

The Three Lions dominated the first 45 minutes in Moscow and went in at half-time 1-0 up courtesy of a wonderful Kieran Trippier free-kick.

However, Croatia’s experience began to tell in the second period and Ivan Perisic’s strike sent the game to extra time, before Mario Mandzukic’s opportunistic finish broke English hearts in the second period.

Speaking after the game Three Lions captain Harry Kane admitted that he gutted, but also stated that he and his team-mates will leave Russia with their heads held high.

“Yeah its tough, we’re gutted,” he told ITV.

“We worked so hard.

“The fans were amazing.

“It was a tough game, a 50/50 game, and I’m sure we’ll look back and there is stuff we should have done.

“But we worked as hard as we could.

“It’s going to hurt for a while but we can hold our heads up high.

“We went further than anyone thought we would and we need to build on it.”
