Klopp: ‘Joy to work’ with Liverpool forward Nunez

Jurgen Klopp has called Darwin Nunez ‘a joy to work with’ after the Liverpool forward’s impressive run of form this season.

Nunez scored for the third consecutive game as Liverpool beat Bournemouth in the Carabao Cup in midweek and has now averaged a goal or assist every 61.5 minutes in all competitions this season.

The Uruguayan had a mixed first season in the Premier League, but has shown signs of finding his feet in English football during the current campaign.

The 24-year-old’s goal against Bournemouth was a microcosm of his time at Liverpool to date, as Nunez was greeted with ironic cheers from the home crowd as he initially mis-controlled a pass from Trent Alexander-Arnold, before beating his marker and firing a winner into the top corner.

Klopp insists he had no doubts over Nunez despite some rash moments in the final third, with the German pleased with the progress the forward has made since his £64m arrival from Benfica.

“It’s really nice to see how he settles now as a boy,” Klopp told Sky Sports.

“The human being behind the player is really settled. Coming in, ‘Good morning!’ He gets into the English thing.

“It’s really different for him. It’s difficult. Nowadays you pay X, Y or Z for a player and everyone expects they come in and hit the ground running and that’s obviously not that simple. Especially with a different language. So it’s really nice to watch him through the week.

“He’s a player full of potential, nobody doubted that but it was a rocky road a little bit. But he’s here now and it’s a joy. It’s a joy to work with him, he loves training, working hard. He’s a different striker to some others but he gives you a lot of options.”
