Jose Fonte close to West Ham United switch

Want away Southampton defender Jose Fonte is close to completing an £8million switch from the South coast club to the capital, as West Ham close in on the defenders signature.

The Southampton captain has already handed in a transfer request at St Marys after being linked with a move to Manchester United last summer.

Fonte was an integral part of Portugal’s victorious Euro 2016 squad in the summer, and was subsequently linked with a move to join up with Jose Mourinho’s side at Old Trafford. A move to take the defender to Manchester never materialised, and the Portuguese manager has now settled on a solid centre back partnership of Phil Jones and Marcos Rojo, with Chris Smalling, Daley Blind and Eric Bailly (currently at the AFCON) in reserve.

However, this has not deterred Jose Fonte wanting to leave Southampton in this window. The defender has already rejected a new deal earlier this season, and is now set to join West Ham United in a deal worth £8million.

The Daily Mail clam that the 33-year old is close to agreeing a £65,000-a-week deal to transfer to the London Stadium. West Ham have struggled for form since their move to the home of the 2012 Olympic Games, and will be hoping and experienced Premier League will improve their fortunes.

Everton are also believed to have been interested in signing the defender, but it seems like the defender will be donning the claret and blue shirt of the Hammers beyond the end of this month.
