Premier League pundit Danny Murphy has claimed that Chelsea and Manchester United midfielders Jorginho and Fred are not good enough to get into Spurs starting XI.
Jorginho moved to Stamford Bridge in a £57 million deal from Napoli this summer and the midfield metronome has received plenty of plaudits for his performances at the base of the Blues midfield, although he has struggled at times recently after being targeted by opposition teams.
Brazil international Fred arrived at Old Trafford in a £50 million deal from Shakhtar Donetsk, but the 25-year-old has found it difficult to adjust to the pace of the Premier League and has only made eight appearances so far this season for Jose Mourinho’s side.
Spurs were ridiculed at the start of the season for not signing any players during the summer transfer window, although the North London club have always insisted that they simply did not think any of the players available would be upgrades on those already available to Mauricio Pochettino.
Former Liverpool midfielder Murphy has stated that the performances of big money signings Jorginho and Fred have vindicated Spurs approach of not spending large sums on players that wouldn’t actually improve their squad.
”I don’t know who they could have signed last summer that would have helped them. Think about what other clubs went out and bought,” Murphy wrote in the Daily Mail.
”Jorginho at Chelsea is a good player but he wouldn’t get in Tottenham’s team, and couldn’t cope with Dele Alli in their individual battle. Manchester United’s £50million signing Fred wouldn’t have strengthened Spurs.”
Spurs convincingly defeated London rivals Chelsea 3-1 at Wembley yesterday to move up to third in the Premier League table.
