Inter Milan have identified Tottenham Hotspur captain Cristian Romero as one of their leading defensive targets this summer, although any move for the Argentina international is expected to be financially complicated.

Sky Sports reports that the Serie A champions are actively exploring a deal for the 28-year-old as they look to strengthen at centre-back. Inter sporting director Piero Ausilio confirmed the club’s interest, revealing discussions are taking place with both the player and Tottenham.

“It’s definitely a deal we are trying to sign with the player and the club,” Ausilio told Sky Italia. “These things take some time but there’s definitely interest. Let’s see.”

Romero has emerged as one of several defenders under consideration at San Siro, with Inter keen to reinforce their back line ahead of the new campaign. However, any transfer is likely to prove difficult because of the financial package required to prise the World Cup winner away from north London.

Despite the complexity of a potential deal, there is an expectation that Tottenham would consider offers if the right valuation is met. Romero remains under contract until 2029, leaving Spurs in a strong negotiating position as they assess their options during the transfer window.

The defender endured an injury-disrupted end to last season after suffering a knee problem, although he still finished the campaign as Tottenham captain. Since arriving from Atalanta in 2021, Romero has made 124 appearances for the club, scoring 12 goals and establishing himself as one of the Premier League’s most aggressive central defenders.

Inter are also targeting reinforcements in other defensive positions. Tottenham full-back Djed Spence remains on the club’s shortlist, although interest has cooled in recent weeks. Monaco’s Vanderson and Feyenoord youngster Givairo Read are also being monitored as Inter continue to evaluate options at right-back.

With the transfer window still open, Romero is expected to remain one of Inter’s priority targets. Whether negotiations progress beyond the early stages will depend on Tottenham’s valuation and whether the Italian champions can structure a package that satisfies the Premier League club.
