Inter Milan want to sign Arsenal defender Riccardo Calafiori as a possible replacement for Alessandro Bastoni.

Bastoni has been heavily linked with an exit from Inter Milan in the summer with Barcelona having made the defender a priority signing.

The Italian international is open to leaving the San Siro in search of a new challenge, having established a reputation as one Serie A’s best centre-backs.

Should Bastoni move on, Calafiori is being targeted as an ideal replacement. The 23-year-old is well-appreciated at Arsenal but a combination of fitness issues and Piero Hincapie’s arrival have limited his minutes this season. Arsenal are set to make Hincapie’s loan from Bayer Leverkusen permanent at the end of the campaign.

Calafiori is also keen to feature at centre-back, having been primarily used as a left-back since arriving in North London from Bologna. His desire for a central role has made him Inter’s chief target, according to TuttoMercatoWeb.

He features as part of a planned overhaul for Inter in the summer, as the Nerazzurri look to refresh their squad.

The Serie A leaders have the fourth-highest average age in the division and suffered a humbling early exit in Europe to Bodo/Glimt. Calafiori, aged 23 and an established Italy international, is seen as an idealistic signing for the rebuild.
