Cristiano Ronaldo has said the greatest victory of his career was representing Portugal after retiring from international football.
Ronaldo has called time on his career with the national team after a record-breaking 146 goals in 243 caps. The 41-year-old has decided to end his time with Portugal, following a fallout with head coach Jorge Jesus during last month’s international break. The Al-Nassr forward released a video confirming his decision on social media.
“Today I finish my walk on the pitch with the national team. I leave with my head held high, with pride in the path I took, and with the awareness that I gave everything I had for Portugal,” Ronaldo said.
“The goals pass, the cups are in museums, the records end up being beaten. But there is something that time can never erase, the place we occupy in people’s hearts.
“I spent my life working to be the best player in the world. Today I realise that the greatest victory was to have deserved to represent the best country in the world.”
Ronaldo won the 2016 European Championship and two UEFA Nations League titles with Portugal, who had never won a major tournament before those triumphs. His numbers for goals (146) and caps (243) are both records in international football.
