Mats Hummels reportedly ‘rejected’ Manchester United before sealing a return to Borussia Dortmund.
The Bayern Munich defender this week re-joined Bundesliga rivals Dortmund in £33.8m deal, three years after leaving the club to move to the Allianz Arena.
Manchester United are believed to be long-term admirers of the 30-year-old and have been linked with a move for the centre-back in recent seasons, with the German admitting he came close to a move to Old Trafford in 2015.
German publication Bild are now reporting that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side made a move to sign the German World Cup winner this summer, even though there had been no speculation whatsoever that a move was on the cards.
Solskjaer is believed to be keen to add to his defensive options in the transfer window and allegedly made a move to sign the experienced defender from Bayern.
According to the report however, despite being offered more money to move to Old Trafford, Hummels rejected United in favour of a return to Dortmund in a bid to continue playing Champions League football.
United are said to be battling rivals Manchester City for Leicester’s Harry Maguire, whilst the club have also seen two bids rejected for Crystal Palace full-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka.
