Howe has silverware in sights ahead of Arsenal semi-final

Eddie Howe has said there is ‘a lot at stake’ for Newcastle ahead of the club’s Carabao Cup semi-final against Arsenal.

Newcastle travel to North London to face Arsenal in the first leg of their semi-final tie on Tuesday evening.

The Magpies enter the clash in good form, having recorded six straight wins in all competitions. That run includes a win in the capital at the weekend, as Howe’s side came from behind to beat Tottenham in the Premier League.

Newcastle are aiming to reach a second Carabao Cup final in three seasons, having lost the 2023 decider to Manchester United at Wembley.

The club’s last silverware success came with an Inter-Cities Fairs Cup triumph in 1969, and Newcastle have not won a domestic trophy since the 1955 FA Cup.

After progress under Howe’s management in recent campaigns, the 47-year-old said there’s plenty at stake as Newcastle seek to end that drought.

“This is an important game for us. We need to be at our absolute best, a high-level game. There is a lot at stake for us.” Howe said at his pre-match press conference.

Asked what it will take from his team to earn a positive first-leg result at the Emirates, Howe said: “Weโ€™ve got to be really good off the ball and solid defensively. Weโ€™ve got to cause Arsenal problems the other way. I donโ€™t think we should overthink it, we just need to get that mix right. Letโ€™s try and continue the good performances weโ€™ve given recently and try and win the game.”
