Liverpool have lost the Community Shield after a penalty shootout defeat to Crystal Palace at Wembley.

Arne Slot’s side missed out on silverware after losing a shootout to the Eagles this afternoon.

Liverpool twice led in the contest through debutants Hugo Ekitike and Jeremie Frimpong, but Palace fought back to force penalties with Jean-Phillipe Mateta and Ismaila Sarr on target.

It’s a defeat that will feel sore for the Premier League champions, but one unlikely to make or break their campaign. In fact, Liverpool might feel a sense of relief to have not won the Community Shield, with history showing that the winners of the season’s curtain-raiser rarely end up as league winners.

Just one of the previous 14 winners of the Community Shield have been crowned Premier League champions the following May, with Manchester City (2018/19) the only team to have broken that record.

Further back, only eight of the previous 33 winners of the Community Shield in the Premier League era have gone on to win the title.
