Rasmus Hojlund ‘incredibly excited’ after completing £72m transfer to Man Utd

Rasmus Hojlund has completed his transfer to Manchester United from Atalanta in a deal that could rise to £72 million in fees.

The Danish striker was unveiled before the Old Trafford crowd on Saturday ahead of their pre-season friendly against French outfit RC Lens, although the move is still subject to international clearance.

The transfer was due to be announced in midweek, but the reveal was delayed as he underwent his medical, before eventually visiting his new surrounds at Man United‘s Carrington training complex.

It is reported that United have agreed an initial transfer fee of £64m with Atalanta for Hojlund, with a further £8m in add-ons included in the deal. He has signed a five-year contract with the option of a further year.

Speaking for the first time as a Man United player, Hojlund said: “It is no secret that I have been a fan of this great club since I was a small boy, and I dreamed of walking out at Old Trafford as a Manchester United player.

“I am incredibly excited by this opportunity to turn that dream into a reality, and I am determined to repay the faith that the club has shown in me. It is still early in my career, but I know that I am ready to make this step up and play with this group of world-class players.

“Once I had spoken to the manager, I knew that this environment would be perfect for my development; I am relishing the opportunity to work with one of the best coaches in the world. Under his guidance and support I know that I am capable of achieving great things together with my new teammates at this special club.”

Hojlund became United’s primary transfer target after losing interest in Tottenham Hotspur centre-forward Harry Kane, who has been heavily linked with a move to Bayern Munich.

The 20-year-old’s transfer value increased rapidly after impressing with Atalanta in Serie A last season. Although he only scored ten goals in 34 appearances in 2022/23, it is believed that Erik ten Hag sees him as a player that can be developed into a top forward.

Standing at 6’3″, Hojlund brings a considerable aerial presence to United’s attack, something they’ve been lacking despite having Wout Weghorst on loan last season.
