Southampton lost 1-0 against Cardiff City today and afterward new boss Ralph Hasenhuttl admitted he witnessed ‘too many mistakes’ from his Saints team.
The former RB Leipzig manager took the reins at St Mary’s after Mark Hughes’ dismissal during the week.
After today’s defeat, the Austrian is beginning to understand the magnitude of the task ahead of him.
“For a long time, it looked like a 0-0. It was a very tough game for both teams,’’ Hasenhuttl told the BBC.
“In the second period, our performance was better and better. We had a few chances but in this best period, we nearly made an own goal. It was a terrible mistake.”
Hasenhuttl felt that Southampton’s mentality was not to blame as he said they never gave up against Cardiff. However, he recognized the long road ahead for him and his new team.
“The mentality was okay. We never gave up today. I have seen some good things from my team but we made too many mistakes today. We know that we have a hard and long way ahead of us,” added Hasenhuttl.
“There are guys in the changing room with their heads down. It’s all about staying together and taking the next step in our development.”
Southampton remain in 19th place in the table after today’s defeat.
