Harry Kane says he is going to “seriously” look into becoming a kicker in the NFL and could even combine the job with a career in Major League Soccer.
The Bayern Munich striker has long considered a potential change in sports and still flirts with the idea of becoming a professional golfer.
Speaking to the media at St George’s Park ahead of England’s UEFA Nations League clash with Spain, Kane revealed that he was “fairly close” to signing a new contract at Bayern, but wants to try something new down the line.
Harry Kane discusses potential future NFL career switch
“That is something I will try and look at a bit more seriously,” the Three Lions captain said. “It all depends on what happens in my career over the next five or six years, the motivation and what I want to do. The NFL is a lot more realistic than the golf one, let’s put it that way.”
Kane added there have been no conversations about playing in the NFL yet and he won’t make the switch so long as he continues to perform at his best.
“If people know I am still on the top of my game here with football, it is not a conversation that would be had,” he said.
Kane raised the possibility of combining a career in the NFL with a stint in MLS, the USA’s top-flight in association football.
“Maybe if I am in the MLS in the future or somewhere like that it might be a thing where you could connect the two, with the seasons,” he said. “But it is in the back of my mind because right now, I am feeling that I want to play as long as I can here.”
The former Tottenham Hotspur star believes that his skillset is very transferable to NFL, more so than other sports.
“I take penalties and it is a very similar pressure and technique,” Kane said. “If I did that, in terms of training, I would be closer to that more than to any other sport. But as I know, with all elite sports, when you watch it on TV, people make it look easy, and you think it is possible, but that is not always the case.
“If I was to do it, it is something I would take seriously. I would take six months to a year to try and practice before.”
Between his new deal with Bayern and desire to compete in a different sport, it appears increasingly unlikely Kane will return to the Premier League with Spurs or any other club before his career is finished.
