Haaland has already broken a number of records this season and has already equalled the 38-game Premier League record of 32 goals with eight fixtures still to play, while he has individually scored more league goals than eight of the teams in the division.

According to The Athletic, part of the deal that took him from the Bundesliga to the Etihad saw a release clause inserted into his deal at Man City, with the forward able to leave the club for £150m should he have wanted to.

However, they say that the release clause was ‘specifically linked’ to Pep Guardiola’s future at the club, and the Catalan’s contract renewal in November saw the agreement in Haaland’s deal cancelled.

The report says that the ‘exact terms of Haaland’s City contract are shrouded in secrecy’ and it is ‘unclear whether similar release clauses’ exist further down the line.

City are, however, said to be keen to try to tie their goal machine down to a new deal at the Etihad, and there is said to be a ‘belief’ that he is ‘open to fresh talks’.

Haaland has been linked with Real Madrid and a move to the Bernabeu is claimed to be an ‘ambition’ of the 22-year-old, though he is also ‘extremely happy’ with the Premier League champions and ‘believes he is at the right club to improve as a player’.
