Haaland hails ‘smart’ De Bruyne after devastating duo dismantle Luton

Erling Haaland has said it is a pleasure to play with Kevin De Bruyne after the duo produced a devastating performance in Manchester City’s 6-2 win at Luton.

Pep Guardiola’s side eased into the FA Cup quarter-finals with a big win at Kenilworth Road, a fixture that saw Haaland become the first player to score five or more goals in an FA Cup tie in 28 years.

De Bruyne was the chief supply line for the Norwegian and helped himself to four assists against the Hatters, with Haaland keen not to overlook the 32-year-old’s contribution to his five-star showing.

“Of course, [he has] massive [influence]. Look at what he’s doing!” Haaland said on De Bruyne.

“He’s doing what he’s best at. It’s a pleasure to play with him.

“It’s quite good [connection]. I think we know what we both want from each other.

“We look at each other often throughout the game. It clicks well. He’s a smart guy and I like to play with smart guys.

“My fitness is getting there and I’m getting back to my best finally. I’m feeling good and it’s an amazing feeling.”

Haaland’s performance was the second time he has scored five times in a game for the Citizens, having previously achieved the feat in a Champions League clash with RB Leipzig last season.

The 23-year-old has now scored 79 goals in 83 appearances in all competitions since moving to the Etihad from Borussia Dortmund in 2022.

City will learn their opponents for the FA Cup quarter-finals when the draw is made at 19:00 on Wednesday 28th February. The club next return to Premier League action against Manchester United at the Etihad on Sunday.
