Pep Guardiola believes he would have been sacked at another club for last season’s performance with Manchester City.
City ended the 2024-25 campaign without a major trophy after a third-place finish and FA Cup final defeat to Crystal Palace. Their campaign included a dreadful run of form in the autumn that saw City lose six times in eight league games.
The Citizens’ disappointing campaign was a rare blemish in an otherwise decorated period for Guardiola in Manchester and the Spaniard will celebrate a decade at the Etihad this summer.
This weekend, City face Manchester United in the Manchester Derby, with their neighbours currently searching for a new manager after Ruben Amorim’s departure. United are hunting for an 11th manager – both permanent and interim – since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement in 2013.
Amid that upheaval and other managerial changes, Guardiola expressed his gratitude at the ongoing support from the Manchester City board.
Asked about the reason for his longevity, Guardiola said at his pre-match press conference:”Results, results.
“If you don’t win, you are sacked. If we don’t win, I would be sacked. We won a lot, that’s why I am sitting here. There is no other secret.
“Another club after last season I would not be here anymore. They are more patient maybe because what we did in the past as well. We had three months that was really poor. The past was really good so that is why I am still here.”
