Guardiola picks his main midfield target this summer

Manchester City are prepared to back their manager Pep Guardiola and spend big agin this summer with a defensive midfielder said to be their top priority.

The Premier League Champions elect had been expected to battle it out with local rivals Manchester United for the signature of Brazil international Fred from Shakhtar Donetsk.

However, a report in the Independent has suggested that Guardiola would now prefer to sign Borussia Dortmund midfielder Julian Weigl instead.

The 22-year-old Germany international is regarded as one of Europes best young players. He is blessed with superb technical ability and has shown over the last few seasons with Dortmund that he has a tactical understanding of the game that belies his tender age.

The report also goes on to say that Guardiola would like to sign a midfield metronome who’s main strength is his passing. Whereas, the former Barcelona coach sees Fred as more of a midfield destroyer who is very similar to Fernandinho.

This news will be greeted with happiness across town at Old Trafford were Jose Mourinho is intent on strengthening his own midfield options during the summer.

United’s Portuguese manager is a big fan of getting his transfer dealings completed as soon as possible during transfer window, so being able to have a free run at Fred will surely be seen as a massive positive.
