Guardiola discusses Manchester United’s role in title race

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has been discussing the role that Manchester United can play in this season’s title race.

Manchester United are currently 6th the league, with 44 points from 23 games, having won their last seven matches in all competitions under interim boss Ole Gunner Solskjaer. However, Guardiola still believes that their city rivals can have a big role swinging this season’s title race.

Both Liverpool and City still have to visit Old Trafford in the Premier League, with Liverpool due to go there on February 24, before Guardiola’s men make the trip on March 16.

The former Barcelona manager clearly believes the fixtures could have a big impact on the where the the title ends up this season.

“If Liverpool are in front two or three points going to Old Trafford and United are 10 or 12 points behind us, what do you think I am going to think the day before that game?

“But I don’t know. We have to go to Old Trafford too and try to win there. If United beat Liverpool – perfect – but if United beat us the situation is the same.

“We can do what we can do against United (but) Liverpool – zero, nothing. I don’t have the telephone number for Solskjaer!

“What we can do is beat United when we go there. It is a big mistake to think about that when you want to compete in all the competitions and focus on what we have to do.

“Before United-Liverpool I’ll tell you more clearly but there are many games for both sides before those games.”

Manchester City travel to Huddersfield Town today, where they hope to claw back Liverpool’s lead at the top of the table to just four points, after the Reds beat Palace in a 4-3 thriller at Anfield on Saturday.
