Pep Guardiola has been singing the praises of French side Lyon following their intriguing Champions League encounter which saw them edge through to the knockout stages of the competition.
City already knew what type of quality that the French side possessed having slipped to a 2-1 defeat at the Etihad in Matchday 1.
The hosts took the lead through Gnarly Cornet in the 55th minute with his curling effort deflecting in off Oleksandr Zinchenko. They were quickly pegged back by Man City though, as £57m defender Aymeric Laporte nodded home from close range.
Cornet put Lyon back in front with just nine minutes to go, with a goal that would have put them through, but the Premier League champions weren’t behind for long as City record goalscorer Sergio Aguero restored parity just two minutes later to see Guardiola’s side progress.
City need to equal Lyon’s result in matchday six to ensure they finish in top spot in Group F, but speaking after the game, Pep Guardiola was full of praise for their French counterparts.
“We are so delighted and so happy,” Guardiola told the media after the game. “It is a big compliment for the team.
“We played one of toughest teams we’ve ever faced. They are physical, strong, they counter-attack incredible.
“We reacted after 1-0 and 2-1 and we are in the final stages. This was our target.
“Now we must try to get a point to finish first in the group stage, but it is so important to go through.”
