Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has joined Jurgen Klopp in criticising the ‘crazy’ English football schedule.
Liverpool boss Klopp this week called for proper breaks in English football, criticising the congested fixture schedule, with Sadio Mane only being given two weeks rest following his involvement in the African Cup of Nations.
Guardiola has now joined his Premier League colleague in insisting more must be done to ensure players are given appropriate rest, with the Man City boss missing six players for the club’s pre-season tour due to international commitments this summer.
Sergio Aguero, Nicolas Otamendi, Ederson, Gabriel Jesus and Fernandinho all participated in the Copa America, whilst Riyad Mahrez’s season only finished on Friday following the AFCON final.
Guardiola has labelled the hectic football calendar as ‘crazy’, warning authorities that a lack of rest will ‘kill our players’.
“It’s a crazy schedule and it is going to kill our players! They have to rest,” Guardiola told a press conference in China.
“I don’t want them to come back when they’re tired, or mentally not recovered from an incredibly tough season.
“We started a new season while Riyad Mahrez had not finished the last one!”
