Gomez: Liverpool must be relentless to become a top team

Liverpool’s Joe Gomez has enjoyed his start to the season. The young English defender has stepped in to replace the injured Dejan Lovren at the heart of Liverpool’s defence, partnering Virgil van Dijk.

Gomez and Van Dijk seem to have struck up an impressive understanding at the back and the fact that Liverpool have made their best ever Premier League start, with five wins from five, bodes well for Gomez’s future in The Reds’ defence.

“As a team, we’ve got off to a great start. If you’d said in the summer we’d win all our first six games, we’d have bitten your hand off to take it.” Gomez told Liverpool’s official website.

The youngster is adamant that now is not the time for patting themselves on the back, however.

“It’s a great, a great experience for us, but we have to keep going and keep progressing. That’s what a top team has to do – never be satisfied, thinking we’ve won a few and have any kind of breathing space. We need to keep going and be relentless every week. We want to beat every team we play.

“That’s what we have to carry on trying to do and we have so many characters in the dressing room who will make sure none of us rest – there is Hendo, Millie and so many others who are on us every week, making sure we stick to the principles and keep going.”

Gomez is eager to look ahead to what’s coming now, rather than dwell on the victory over PSG.

“PSG is behind us now – we got the result, we got the three points and that’s good, but now it’s onto the next one. Every Premier League game is a massive game with three points up for grabs. They’re what we want.”

He will also be aware that Dejan Lovren is nearing full fitness, now. These next few weeks are the most important, so far, in the young career of Joe Gomez. How he deals with the pressure and expectations of being a first-team regular may well define his season and more.
