‘Goals will come’ – Arteta satisfied with Aubameyang performances despite mini goal drought

Mikel Arteta insists he is satisfied with the performances of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and says the ‘goals will come’ for the forward despite his recent barren run.

Aubameyang has failed to score since the opening day of the Premier League season and struggled to make an impact during Arsenal‘s 1-0 defeat at Manchester City last weekend, the form of the north London side’s talismanic captain having emerged as a concern in recent weeks.

The Gabon international has been a central figure since moving to the Emirates and has scored prolifically in each of the past two seasons, with his signing of a new contract earlier this season a welcome boost to Mikel Arteta’s rebuild.

Arteta has discussed the forward’s form ahead of tonight’s Europa League group stage opener against Rapid Vienna and says he remains pleased with Aubameyang’s performances despite his lack of goals, insisting he remains confident the star’s scoring touch will soon return.

“With all the strikers, if you ask them when they don’t score for three or four games if there are concerns… in my opinion he is performing right now,” Arteta said at his press match press conference.

“He could’ve scored again on Saturday [against Man City] in a one-on-one situation where he normally does.

“We’re trying to get him in better positions as frequently as we can to give him the best possible chance. Goals will come.”

Arsenal could rotate their options this evening with Thomas Partey in line for his first start since signing from Atletico Madrid, whilst the likes of Reiss Nelson and Eddie Nketiah could be handed opportunities in Austria.

Two players who will not feature are Mesut Ozil and Sokratis, the out-of-favour duo having been omitted from Arsenal’s Premier League and Europa League squads by Arteta.
