Ryan Giggs believes Eric Cantona would have been the ‘dream’ partner for Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford.
The Manchester United legend and current forward Rashford were discussing their respective emergences as teenagers into the first-team set-up at Old Trafford, Giggs having gone on to establish himself as one of the best player’s in the club’s history in a career which saw him become Britain’s most decorated footballer.
Like Giggs, Rashford would breakthrough as a teenager before cementing himself in the senior set-up, and when discussing their respective journeys the 22-year-old was keen to question Giggs on the abilities of the iconic Cantona, the French forward having proven to be the catalyst behind the early successes of the Premier League era.
Speaking on B/R Football, Giggs was full of praise for the maverick forward and when asked by Rashford what it was like to play with Cantona, admitted he believes he would have been the perfect partner for the England international.
“He was just different,” Giggs said.
“You see him there, look how big he is. People don’t realise how big and strong he was. He was like a target man but also he had them little touches.”
“For you he would have been a dream,” Giggs told Rashford.
“Because you know when you make those runs, he would always find you, and you wouldn’t have to break stride. You know sometimes in a game, you make runs, you make runs, but no-one’s finding you? As soon as he got the ball, he wasn’t interested in scoring – he wanted to score – but he got as much pleasure out of making assists. He was brilliant to play with.”
Giggs would win four league titles and two FA Cups alongside Cantona, and says the star’s dedication to training set the standard and proved to be a lesson following his own arrival into the first-team.
“Just the way that he trained. You must have seen coming up to the first team, players you’ve looked up to, training hard. You watch them and how they train and conduct themselves.”
