Gary Neville criticises Arsenal and Liverpool over ‘dangerous’ statements

Gary Neville has called out Arsenal for their “dangerous” statement in the wake of Saturday’s defeat to Newcastle United, comparing to Liverpool’s reaction to their controversial defeat at Tottenham in September.

The Gunners released a statement on Sunday in defence of their manager, Mikel Arteta, after he lambasted the state of refereeing in the Premier League. His side were defeated at St James’ Park following a contentious 64th-minute goal by Anthony Gordon.

The Spaniard’s rant follows on from Jurgen Klopp’s criticism of VAR after Luis Diaz had a goal incorrectly ruled offside against Spurs. The Liverpool boss called for a replay after the PGMOL admitted that a mistake had been made, and the club released a statement claiming that “sporting integrity” had been “undermined”.

Neville aired his concerns about these kind of statements when speaking on Sky Sports during Monday Night Football.

“Liverpool made a shocking go on PGMOL a couple of weeks ago at Spurs and we knew it was wrong,” the former Manchester United defender said.

“They were hard done by for Luis Diaz’s disallowed goal. The day after Liverpool wrote their statement mentioning ‘sporting integrity’ and looking at all options and suggested a replay.

“I thought it was quite dangerous. Arsenal’s statement was quite dangerous too.”
