Southgate coy on England future beyond Euros

Gareth Southgate has said he hasn’t ‘thought about’ his future as England manager beyond next summer’s European Championship.

Southgate’s contract with England is set to expire after Euro 2024 and it is believed the 53-year-old will leave his role at the conclusion of the tournament.

Southgate considered leaving the Three Lions after last winter’s World Cup in Qatar, before deciding to stay on and lead England into a fourth major tournament.

England conclude their qualification campaign against North Macedonia on Monday evening, with a place at the finals already assured.

Speaking at his pre-match press conference, Southgate said his focus is on tonight’s game and preparations for Euro 2024.

“I haven’t thought about it, really,” Southgate said on his future.

“I’ve thought about the game tomorrow and the need for a better performance than Friday so that’s what I’ve been focusing on.

“I feel almost as if we’ve almost talked too much about the Euros already and I didn’t see our focus in the right place at the weekend.

“So, it’s tomorrow, then it’s March, then it’s the summer. And we go from there.”
