Fulham agree major transfer deal with Real Madrid

The forward will reunite with Alvaro Arbeloa in a £34m move.

Fulham have reportedly agreed a deal to sign Gonzalo Garcia from Real Madrid in the summer transfer window.

The forward will be the Cottagers’ second signing of the summer after Jonah Kusi-Asare joined from Bayern Munich in June, and their first of the Alvaro Arbeloa era.

Arbeloa was named as the club’s new head coach in early July, succeeding Marco Silva in the role after the Portuguese took over the reins at Benfica.

Fulham agree £34m transfer deal with Real Madrid for Garcia

Multiple reports coming out of Spain on Thursday claimed that Fulham had agreed a deal with Real for Garcia worth £60 million (€70m), but the actual transfer fee appears to be much lower than that.

Carrusel Deportivo reported that the 22-year-old will join the west London outfit for £34.2 million (€40m), with Madrid retaining 33 per cent of the player’s rights.

Fabrizio Romano confirmed that is the correct fee and that Fulham will also potentially pay £1.7 million (€2m) in add-ons. Real have also inserted a 30 per cent sell-on clause into the deal and retain matching rights on any potential future move.

It’s not the only Real player with whom Arbeloa is looking to be reunited, as Fulham are also trying to sign Cesar Palacios soon. The 21-year-old midfielder made seven senior appearances for the Spanish club last season.

Update: Fulham have reportedly agreed to buy Palacios from Real for £8.6 million (€10m), with a 30 per cent sell-on clause and matching rights also included in the deal.

Garcia has scored 13 goals in 51 appearances for Real, four of which came in last summer’s FIFA Club World Cup, making him the tournament’s top goal scorer. He made his international debut for Spain last month, coming off the bench in a FIFA World Cup warm-up match against Iraq which ended 1-1, but he was not named in Luis De La Fuente’s 26-man squad that won the competition earlier this month.
