Former Man United manager blasts Chelsea star

Former Manchester United manager Louis Van Gaal has slammed Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois for the costly mistake he made during his sides recent 3-0 Champions League defeat to Barcelona at the Nou Camp.

The Belgium international allowed a fairly tame near post shot from Lionel Messi to go through his legs after just two minutes of Chelsea’s second leg last 16 tie.

Unfortunately for Courtois, the Blues were unable to recover from conceding such an early goal against a top side like Barca, and were eliminated 4-1 on aggregate.

Speaking to Ziggo Sports, Van Gaal stated that such a schoolboy goalkeeping mistake just shouldn’t happen at such an elite level, and revealed that any goalkeeper working with his coaching team would not have made such an error.

“The game was turned upside down due to the blunder of Courtois [for Messi’s first goal] which I think is a big blunder,”

“If he’d have had [Dutch former Manchester United goalkeeping coach] Frans Hoek as goalkeeper coach, he would have closed his legs.

“That just should not be allowed to happen.” Van Gaal said.
