Former Liverpool midfielder Jason McAteer thinks that the ‘soap opera’ surrounding Jose Mourinho will cost Manchester United Champions League football next season.
Every day, it seems like the media have found a shiny new stick to beat the Manchester United manager with, with the Portuguese making the headlines for a number of reasons, all of them seemingly wrong.
Whether it be his summer transfer frustrations, his relationship with Paul Pogba, his use of Marcus Rashford, or even just falling over a rope, Mourinho can do nothing right at the minute.
The Red Devils have got off to a difficult start to their Premier League campaign, losing two of their opening three games, before getting back on track with a 2-0 win over Burnley.
However, former Liverpool midfielder McAteer reckons that the Portuguese’s constant antics will cost United their place at European football’s top table next season:
“With United it’s a soap opera. Every week you’re looking at something different that’s coming out there, whether it’s Mourinho or Pogba or unhappy players,” McAteer told the Express.
Making his predictions for the top four, McAteer said: “It’s going to be difficult between Liverpool and City.
“Liverpool have the edge over City when it comes to head-to-head, but they’ve dropped silly points in previous seasons – that’s what they need to address.
“It’s whether Pep [Guardiola] handles the season well; it’s a really difficult season to manage coming off the back of a World Cup… it’s more wide open than you think.
“I’m going to go Liverpool to nick it, City second, Chelsea third and Tottenham fourth.”
