Florian Wirtz medical booked ahead of record Liverpool transfer

The playmaker is set to join the Reds in a £116m deal.

Florian Wirtz will undergo a medical when he returns from his break after Liverpool agreed a club record transfer fee with Bayer Leverkusen.

The German playmaker will move to Anfield on a five-year deal which will see the Reds pay Leverkusen an initial £100 million.

The fee could rise to £116m if add-on clauses are met, which would make it the most expensive transfer by a British club in history.

Liverpool and Leverkusen have “already sealed all documents” for the Wirtz deal, according to Fabrizio Romano, who broke news of the agreement last Tuesday. The transfer expert says the attacking midfielder will travel for his medical after his holidays.

Wirtz will be the fourth new arrival at the club this summer in their bid to strengthen Arne Slot’s squad after winning the Premier League title.

Former Leverkusen teammate Jeremie Frimpong was bought for £29.5m, Giorgi Mamardashvili has moved from Valencia after a deal was reached last year, and backup goalkeeper Armin Pecsi has been signed from Puskas Akademia.

Liverpool fended off interest from Bayern Munich, Real Madrid and Manchester City to capture one of the most highly-rated attackers in world football.

Since 2023/24, Wirtz has created the fourth-most chances from open play (124), completed the fourth-most dribbles (161), and provided the second-most assists (23) in Europe’s top five leagues. Only Mo Salah (28) has set up more goals in that time.

The Germany international was the star player in Leverkusen’s unprecedented unbeaten Bundesliga and German Cup double in 2023/24, registering 29 goal involvements across both competitions.

Wirtz also contributed four goals and four assists during their run to the Europa League final, which they lost 3-0 to Atalanta in Dublin.
