The Brazilian Serie A, also known as the Campeonato Brasileiro Serie A, is the top domestic league in Brazilian football and is the most watched league in South America. The passionate fans and top quality teams make it one of the most competitive leagues in world football and the battle to be crowned champions is expected to be a fierce one this season.
There have been five different title winners over the past 10 years so it’s never easy to predict who’s going to lift the title. Flamengo, Santos, Palmeiras, Sao Paolo, Corinthians and Internacional are all prestigious clubs with quality squads and they are all battling for the championship this campaign. Just 10 points currently separates those six teams at the top of the table so it looks like it’s going to be an exciting title race.
Palmeiras started the season strongly and were tipped as the early favourites for the Campeonato Brasileiro title. They currently sit second in the division on 39 points from their 19 games so Mano Menezes’ side are expected to be right in the mix at the end of the campaign with bookmakers making them the 2/1 second favourites.
However, it’s Flamengo who lead the way at the half-way stage as they are three points clear of Palmeiras and are ¾ favourites to claim the title. And with the likes of Gabriel Barbosa, Rafinha, Diego and Filipe Luis in their team they are going to take some beating.
Santos are currently third in the table on 37 points and they can never be written off while Sao Paulo sit fourth just two points behind – however they’ve played a game more than their rivals. The Tricolor pulled off a major coup after signing Brazilian legend Dani Alves in the summer and he’ll be a huge addition having played for the likes of Barcelona, Juventus and Paris Saint-Germain during an illustrious career.
Sao Paulo also have Juanfran, Everton and Alex Pato in their squad so they have the potential to make a late push for the title during the second half of the season and some bettors will be tempted to back them at odds of 80/1.
Internacional are another of the outsiders as they are fifth in the table – nine points behind Flamengo – while Corinthians are seen as a 100/1 long-shot to make up the 10-point deficit to clinch their third Campeonato Brasileiro Serie A title in five years.
It’s going to be a fascinating battle between these South American giants but Flamengo and Palmeiras are the sides to catch as we head into the second half of the season with it all to play for.
