A lot of players tell us in their post match interviews that they only care about their team winning and are not concerned by individual awards, but here’s the thing…they are lying.
Football players are greedy and no players are more greedy than strikers. For strikers, who pride themselves on their goalscoring record, there is one award that is more coveted than any other and that’s the Premier League Golden Boot, which is handed out to the player with the most top flight goals in a season.
With the battle for the 2018/19 Golden Boot proving an exciting one, we thought we’d have a look at the five favourites.
Raheem Sterling 50/1
Man City international Sterling brought his tally for the season up to 12 with a brace during his sides 6-0 demolition of Chelsea at the Etihad last Sunday – not bad for a winger who apparently can’t finish.
England international Sterling’s much-maligned finishing ability may have massively improved and the 24-year-old may well be in the form of his life, but he has next to no chance of outgunning the calibre of sharp shooters higher up this list, and that’s why the camel coats make him such a rank outsider.
Harry Kane 12/1
Spurs talisman and English football’s blue eyed boy Harry Kane has been in predictably lethal form in front of goal this season, netting 14 times in 22 appearances.
The 25-year-old hitman has won the Golden Boot in two of the last three campaigns, and despite losing out to Mohamed Salah last season, Kane actually broke the 30 Premier League goal mark for the first time.
However, the England captain damaged his ankle ligaments against Manchester United back in mid-January and is expected to be out of action until March, so chances are the other men further up this list will have pulled so far away from Kane that he’ll have no chance of winning the prestigious gong this season.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang 11/2
Lighting quick front man Aubameyang has netted an outstanding 25 Premier League goals in just 38 appearances since his big money move to Arsenal from Borussia Dortmund last January.
The eccentric striker’s pace and lethal finishing ability make him a nightmare for top-flight defenders; currently on 15 strikes, the Gabon international is quite rightly one of the favourites to finish with the most goals this season.
Mohamed Salah 6/4
Most observers knew that Liverpool were signing a good player when they paid Roma £38 million for Salah’s services in the summer of 2017, but few could have predicted the Egyptian attacker developing into a truly world class goal machine over the last 18 months or so.
Salah took the Premier League by storm last season, winning the Golden Boot and PFA Player of the Year award after netting a record breaking 32 top-flight goals.
The 26-year-old has maintained his superb form this season, netting 17 times and providing seven assist in 26 appearances. Salah is an integral part of Liverpool’s pursuit of a first Premier League title as the Reds battle it out for the top flight crown with Man City, who have their own deadly goalscorer…
Sergio Aguero 5/4
Tied with Salah on 17 strikes is Man City legend Sergio ‘Kun,’ Aguero. The diminutive Argentine has been in razor sharp form so far in 2019, and has netted two hat-tricks in his last three Premier League games; against top six sides Arsenal and Chelsea no less.
Aguero has been destroying top flight defenders since his arrival at the Etihad in 2011, and has proven himself capable of finding the onion bag in every way imaginable over the years.
Although it will be intriguing to see how the battle for the top scorer award plays out, the Bookies may 30-year-old Aguero the slight favourite to win this years Golden Boot, adding to the one he picked up back in 2014/15.
Those were the five strikers with the biggest chance of winning this year’s Golden Boot. No doubt it is going to be an exciting battle and fans are waiting passionately to see their favourites winning this race.
