New Liverpool signing Fabinho has denied that he was ever close to signing for his new clubs arch rivals Manchester United.
The 24-year-old was heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford for the best part of 18 months, before deciding to join Jurgen Klopp’s side for £43.7 million from Monaco at the start of the summer, in a deal that caught both fans and the media by surprise.
Although Fabinho has admitted that United made some tentative enquiries about his availability, he has moved to quash suggestions that a move to Manchester had ever really been likely.
“I was never close to signing for Manchester United, no,” he told FourFourTwo magazine.
“I heard things said about it, but the truth is it was never a strong possibility.
“I won’t deny there were a few conversations about my situation with Monaco, but there was never an official offer from United.”
Fabinho has begun pre season training at Liverpool’s Melwood training complex in recent days, and Reds fans will be looking forward to the start of the next Premier League season so they can get a chance to see the highly rated midfielder in action.
