Patrice Evra has been recalling how he welcomed Robin Van Persie to Old Trafford after the Dutch striker swapped Arsenal for Manchester United in 2012.
Evra is spending his summer working as a World Cup pundit and has been keeping us all entertained by sharing some hilarious tales from his playing days.
The former Manchester United and France left-back has revealed that after Van Persie’s controversial £25 million move to Old Trafford, Evra advised the talented striker that he had now joined a ‘’proper team.”
Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal were of course regularly accused of lacking mental and physical toughness over the last decade and Evra even went as far as labelling a ‘’baby team.”
“I give you an example when Robin van Persie joined Man United,” Evra told ITV.
“First of all when he came I said ‘Welcome to a proper team, a man team, not a baby team’.
“And he laughed, but he understood straight away because I remember him saying: ‘Patrice, to be fair, I just feel like now I’m playing for a big team because all of you win many trophies, many medals, and you still go in the gym before training, going in the gym after training’.
“Robin was like a kid, he was just like amazed about that. When he looked at us he’d say: ‘When I see all of you guys, I have to work hard because I want to win, I want to win trophies’.”
History tells us that Van Persie made the right decision to move North, he was the star man in his first season at Old Trafford as Sir Alex Ferguson’s United side romped to the 2012/2013 Premier League title.
