Everton travel to the Stadium of Light on Monday night in desperate need of a result to halt their recent slide.
Unfortunately, the Toffees have lost their last two league games without scoring a single goal. Consequently, David Moyes is now facing the prospect of leading his side to three straight goalless defeats. This is a run the club has not experienced since October 2005.
The manager returns to his former club facing a tough challenge. He must prepare his team to face the Premier League’s surprise package. However, Everton do have a strong recent head-to-head record in their favour. In fact, they won both meetings the last time these clubs were in the top flight. A repeat performance is vital to steer the team away from the bottom half of the table.
Everton team news
David Moyes has a relatively fit squad to choose from for the trip to Wearside. His defensive options, however, remain thin. Jarrad Branthwaite is out long-term as he recovers from hamstring surgery. Furthermore, fellow defender Nathan Patterson is also sidelined after a minor groin procedure.
This means Michael Keane and James Tarkowski are set to continue their partnership at centre-back. In goal, Jordan Pickford will make his first league appearance against his boyhood club, Sunderland, since leaving in 2017. In attack, Jack Grealish will be the key source of creativity. He currently leads the entire Premier League in open-play chances created (19).
Everton predicted Lineup
Possible Everton starting XI: Pickford; O’Brien, Keane, Tarkowski, Mykolenko; Garner, Gueye; Ndiaye, Dewsbury-Hall, Grealish; Barry
