Everton are plotting a £40m move to sign Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy according to reports today.

The Sunday Mirror claim that Everton will challenge Chelsea to sign the England international as they look to strengthen their squad in these last few days of the transfer window.

Everton have been frustrated in their attempts to sign a new striker, with Olivier Giroud opting to stay and fight for his place at Arsenal rather than move to Goodison Park.

Chelsea are also believed to be interested in signing Vardy, as they look to strengthen their attacking options this season, with Diego Costa likely to be allowed to leave in before Thursday’s transfer deadline passes.

Everton have also been linked with signing Costa on a short term loan deal, before he would eventually return to Atletico Madrid  in January when the La Liga sides transfer ban has ended.

The Blues have already splashed out £150m on signing seven players this summer, including a club record £45m deal to sign Gylfi Sigurdsson.
