Everton have stepped up their interest in Uruguay U21 international Federico Martinez according to reports today.

The Sun claim that Ronald Koeman is interested in signing the winger who plays for Liverpool FC in the Uruguayan capital of Montevideo, a club that got their name from their English counterparts after the two cities had historic links thanks to the famous Merseyside port.

Martinez has been likened to Argentina and Paris Saint Germain star Angel di Maria and has also been linked with Atletico Madrid.

The 21-year-old has a Spanish passport, meaning that he would be able to complete a move to the Premier League, without the need to obtain a work permit.

Arsenal are also believed to be interested in signing the youngster.
