Everton have rejected a bid from Chelsea for midfielder Ross Barkley.
With just 24 hours to go for the end of the window, Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea look to be leading the race for the Englishman
The 23-year-old has been an Everton player throughout his whole career but is a transfer target for Champions Chelsea and runners up, Tottenham.
The Premier League champions, who have been left frustrated all summer, have submitted an official bid of £25m, but that has been swiftly rejected by the Goodison Park outfit. Spurs are said to be holding strong interest as well, however, there has been no formal bid from their side yet.
Barkley situation is complicated
Barkley scored five goals and made eight assists last season as the Toffees qualified for Europe and face a testing Europa League campaign ahead of them. However, his inconsistency in form and output has led to him being in-and-out of the starting XI. The summer hasn’t been great for the man from Liverpool.
The serious injury he sustained in training has hurt his chances of playing regular football anytime soon. However, the injury hasn’t stopped Chelsea and Spurs from pursuing his signature. The battle for Barkley looks set to go on until the final hour of deadline day, with either Chelsea or Spurs his potential destination.
Everton manager Ronald Koeman made Barkley’s situation clear, in early July. He confirmed that the young attacker was on his way out of the club after he rejected a contract extension. Everton have slapped a price of £50m on Barkley, with the expectation that they could accept an offer closer to £35m.
Everton looking to wrap up business
Romelu Lukaku’s record sale to Manchester United has enabled the Toffees to do some significant business this summer. That money has brought the likes of Davy Klaassen, Sandro Ramirez, Jordan Pickford and all the other major signings. The club is still hoping to do more business before the end of the window.
Koeman spoke on the matter recently and said that the club is still hoping to sign two or three players. Nikola Vlasic is reportedly on his way to Everton from Hajduk Split, while Diego Costa has been spoken about a lot as well. Koeman hasn’t denied interest in the Spanish striker who is almost in exile at Chelsea.
