Euro 2016: Day 17 Round-Up

Three more games, three more teams eliminated as just ten teams remain in this year’s European Championships.

France 2-1 Republic of Ireland

Robbie Brady gave the Irish faithful hope of a huge upset after he converted a second minute penalty. However, a second half brace from Atletico Madrid forward Antoine Griezmann shattered Irish hopes and took the hosts to a quarter final fixture against England or Iceland.

Germany 3-0 Slovakia

Slovakia put up a resolute defensive performance in their last Group game against England, but today crumbled in front of the World Champions. Jerome Boateng opened the scoring early on, before Julian Draxler superbly set up Mario Gomez for a second. Draxler then became goal scorer to wrap up a comfortable victory, and a quarter final fixture against Italy or Spain.

Hungary 0-4 Belgium

Hungary worked hard to win Group F against the odds, but were unable to stop the sublime Belgians who recorded the biggest win of the tournament. Toby Alderweireld opened the scoring in the first half, before West Ham target Michy Batshuayi scored just one minute after his introduction. A minute later it was 3-0 after the superb Eden Hazard scored, before Yannick Carrasco added a fourth in second half stoppage time. Belgium will face Wales in the next round.
