Euro 2016: Day 12 Round-Up

The list of teams that have qualified for the knockout stages got a little longer yesterday, after Groups C and D came to their dramatic conclusion.

Northern Ireland 0-1 Germany, Group C
Northern Ireland were brave and gutsy, but Germanys quality shined through as they beat they Irish minnows 1-0. Mario Gomez’s first half strike was the difference between the sides in the end but it could have been so different.
Thomas Müller hit the bar and the post, whilst Northern Ireland goalkeeper Michael McGovern made save after save to give Northern Ireland 3rd place in Group C, whilst Germany took top spot.

Ukraine 0-1 Poland, Group C
Poland secured their place in the last 16 with a 1-0 win over rivals Ukraine. Jakob Blasczykowski scored the only goal of the game to secure second spot in Group C.

Czech Republic 0-2 Turkey, Group D
Turkey finally got off the mark in Euro 2016, securing their only 3 points of the tournament. Goals from Burak Yilmaz and Ozan Tufan secured the victory. However their inferior goal difference confirmed that Northern Ireland qualified for the Last 16 stage, whilst Turkey must wait for the results of tonight’s games to learn their fate.

Croatia 2-1 Spain, Group D
One of the shocks of the tournament in Bordeaux as Croatia came from behind to beat tournament favourites Spain.
New Real Madrid signing Alvaro Morata scored his third of the tournament when he opened the scoring after 7 minutes. Croatia equalised on the stroke of half time through Nikola Kalinic before Ivan Perisic struck a late winner past David de Gea at the near post. The result takes the Croatians to top spot in Group D and leaving the Spanish in second.
