Lionesses learn European Championships qualifier opponents

England have learned their opposition for qualification for the 2025 women’s European Championship.

The Lionesses are the defending champions after winning the tournament on home soil in 2022, before finishing as runners-up to Spain at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Sarina Wiegman’s side will face France, Sweden, and the Republic of Ireland in their qualification pool for the next European Championship, following the draw at UEFA’s headquarters on Tuesday.

It represents a tough draw for the Lionesses, with both France and Sweden semi-finalists at Euro 2022. The latter also finished third at the World Cup last year.

France, England and Sweden are currently ranked third, fourth and fifth in the FIFA rankings, with the Republic of Ireland outsiders in the group and ranked 24th.

The teams will face each other home and away in qualification with the group winners and runners-up earning guaranteed entry to the European Championship.

England are aiming to become just the second nation, after Germany, to win back-to-back women’s UEFA Championships. The Germans won six consecutive titles between 1995 and 2013.
