Kane outlines why he is better than he was at 2018 World Cup

Harry Kane has outlined why he believes he is a better player than when England reached the semi-finals of the 2018 World Cup.

Kane became the first English player since Gary Lineker to win a World Cup Golden Boot after scoring six goals at the finals three years ago, though believes he has improved since that showing as the Three Lions bid to make an impression on Euro 2020.

The 27-year-old boasts an impressive record of 34 goals in 55 caps for the national side, whilst he arrives at the tournament after a career-best campaign that saw the forward finish as both the leading goalscorer and assist provider in the Premier League.

Speaking ahead of England’s clash with Scotland on Friday evening, Kane warned their Group D opponents that he is now a better player than when he last featured at a major tournament.

“I think so. Obviously, I’ve got a lot more experience and my game understanding is a lot better,” he said at a press conference.

“I’ve got better at knowing when to drop deep and when to run in behind, and using that to my advantage makes it not as easy for defenders; sometimes they don’t know whether to come all the way with you or stay back.

“I guess I’m a player who takes each game differently. I’ll assess the game as I’m playing and see what is going to work best for the team. But for sure over the last few years I think I’ve become a better player and hopefully, I will continue to do that over the next three years as well.”

Kane outlined England’s ambitions for this summer’s tournament and believes the squad would be disappointed if they failed to at least make another semi-final, with the Tottenham hoping to steer Gareth Southgate’s side to tournament success for the first time since 1966.

“If we fell short of a semi-final then we would be disappointed as players,” he said.

“We’ve been moving in the right direction in the last three or four years and the next step is to try and get into the final and hopefully win it.”
