Emiliano Martinez has been nominated for the Yashin Trophy in 2024 as the Aston Villa goalkeeper looks to make history.
Martinez has been included on a 10-man shortlist of nominees for the prestigious award, presented annually by France Football to the best performing goalkeeper at the Ballon d’Or ceremony.
The 32-year-old was handed the honour in 2023 following his role in Argentina’s World Cup triumph in Qatar the previous winter and is aiming to become the first goalkeeper to win the award in consecutive years.
Martinez has another strong case for the award after another impressive major tournament with the national team. For the third consecutive major tournament, he won the Golden Glove as Argentina defended their Copa America title. He also helped Aston Villa to Champions League qualification for the first time.
New Liverpool goalkeeper among Yashin Trophy nominees
New Liverpool goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili is also nominated after starring during Georgia’s major tournament debut this summer.
The 23-year-old led the tournament for saves as Georgia reached the last 16 at Euro 2024, having led La Liga for expected goals prevented in 2023/24. Mamardashvili will link up with Liverpool in 2025 after the Reds agreed a deal to sign the shot-stopper from Valencia.
Unai Simon, who helped Spain to success at Euro 2024, is also on the shortlist, as is Real Madrid’s Champions League-winning goalkeeper, Andriy Lunin.
