Unai Emery has urged Mesut Ozil to be more of a team player at Arsenal after years of being allowed to get away with murder at Arsenal.
The German has divided opinion among fans for a number of years due to his exquisite creative abilities and his impressive assist stats, but also his knack of drifting in-and-out of games.
However, despite Arsene Wenger having let the German get away with it for a number of years at Arsenal, it seems as though the Frenchman’s successor, Unai Emery, is having none of it, and is insisting that every player has a job to do in both attack and defence:
“There are defensive moments and attacking moments,” Emery told his pre-match press conference.
“Every player needs this commitment. We need to start together, whether we are attacking or defending. I want that from every player, defensive moments are for each and every player.
“Ozil has played all his career like a No 10, like a right winger going inside to receive the ball. It’s clear he needs the ball more, to give more options in the attacking moments. He needs to do that in each match – be demanding for us.”
Having lost their opening game against Man City last week, Unai Emery’s side face the equally difficult challenge of facing Chelsea at Stamford Bridge in this afternoon’s late game, as they search for their first Premier League point of the season.
