Eddie Howe will reportedly leave Newcastle United in the coming days, less than a month before the start of the new Premier League season.
The 48-year-old remained in charge of the first team following talks with the club’s hierarchy after a disappointing campaign in which they failed to qualify for Europe, finishing 12th in the table.
Newcastle have since sold key players Sandro Tonali and Anthony Gordon, while Bruno Guimaraes has been heavily linked with a move to Arsenal.
Howe set for shock Newcastle exit as successor revealed
According to The Athletic, Howe has told Newcastle he wants to “take a break from football” and leaves on “amicable” terms, with the club “well prepared” for his exit.
The Magpies already have a successor lined up, with Matthias Jaissle of Al Ahli set to replace him in the dugout. The German coach has won the AFC Champions League twice with the Saudi club, who are also owned by the Public Investment Fund (PIF).
Howe’s decision to walk away from Newcastle comes in the immediate wake of a 4-1 defeat to Championship side Bristol City in a pre-season friendly.
The former Bournemouth boss leaves St. James’ Park after five years in charge, during which time he claimed the club’s first major trophy in 56 years by winning the League Cup in 2025. The team also qualified for the UEFA Champions League twice under his leadership.
