Lucas Digne has said he is relishing the prospect of an ‘amazing, amazing occasion’ as Aston Villa face Freiburg in the Europa League final tonight.
Aston Villa take on the Bundesliga side in Istanbul this evening, with the chance to win a first major trophy since 1996.
Victory would be the culmination of several seasons of progress under Unai Emery, and cap a fine campaign that has already delivered Champions League qualification.
Speaking to the media this week, Digne said the squad are determined to not miss a massive opportunity to make club history.
Aston Villa have never previously won this competition, and have not won a major trophy of any kind since League Cup success 30 years ago.
“It’s a big opportunity and I think it’s a reward for all the work we did over a few years now,” Digne said.
“We can reach our goal to win a trophy for our fans, for us, for the work we did. It could be an amazing, amazing occasion.
“We’ve qualified already for the Champions League next season, and it was a main target for us.
“To do it in front of our fans at Villa Park, under the lights, against a big team, it was amazing.
“Now we have to just focus on the final in Istanbul.”
