Dean Smith has thrown down the gauntlet for his players by insisting that they need to be ‘obsessed’ with promotion to the Premier League.
When Smith left Brentford for Villa Park earlier this season, the Villains were languishing in the bottom half of the table, but the Midlands outfit have now climbed to 11th place in the Championship following an impressive victory over Derby.
Smith has told his players that they should dream big and be obsessed with the opportunity to be promoted to the Premier League.
“The biggest thing for me is that we can’t be obsessed with beating Birmingham City. We have to be obsessed with winning every game,” Smith told avfc.co.uk ahead of the Midlands Derby in the Championship this weekend.
“That’s regardless of whether it’s Birmingham City, West Bromwich Albion, Derby County — our obsession is to get into the top two this season – or the top six if we can’t make the top two.
“I’ve been to the derby game and sat in the stands as an Aston Villa fan before. Even as Brentford manager, I came to the game with my daughter to watch the 2-0. My earliest recollections of the matches were during the League Championship winning era. I certainly know what it means to the supporters.”
The Midlands clubs are hot on each other’s tails in the division, with Villa having climbed to 11th, one spot above Garry Monk’s Blues very recently.
Monk will want his players to upset the odds and keep the Villa faithful quiet on Sunday afternoon, when the game kicks off at 2pm.
