Manchester United are not expected to sign Lewis Hall from Newcastle this summer, despite interest in the defender.
Hall is a player of interest to Manchester United who are seeking a long-term replacement for Luke Shaw at left-back.
Shaw has entered the final 12 months of his deal at Old Trafford, while the Red Devils want increased competition ahead of their Champions League return, amid Shaw’s history of fitness issues.
However, a move for Hall looks unlikely, according to David Ornstein. The Athletic’s transfer insider said he does not expect the move to happen, as Newcastle look to hold on to a leading asset.
The Magpies have endured a summer of upheaval with head coach Eddie Howe stepping down, and both Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali leaving St James’ Park. Club captain Bruno Guimaraes is also nearing a £75m transfer to Arsenal.
As a result, Ornstein expects Newcastle to retain Hall, with no financial pressure to sell. He said he expects Newcastle to try and tie the 21-year-old down to a new long-term deal. Hall’s current contract runs until 2029.
“I don’t expect [him] to be coming to Manchester United,” Ornstein said.
“There’s clearly some interest, but Newcastle will be determined to keep a hold of him, probably even more so following the departure of Eddie Howe, and let’s see that they would even like to time down to a new contract”
