Coventry City vs Sunderland – Predicted lineup and team news

Coventry City host Sunderland at the Coventry Building Society Arena on Saturday afternoon, looking to arrest a two-match losing run.

Coventry City host Sunderland at the Coventry Building Society Arena on Saturday afternoon, looking to arrest a two-match losing run.

Frank Lampard’s side sit 19th in the Premier League on six points, just a single point above Saturday’s opponents, and they go into the match having lost back-to-back league fixtures, most recently a 1-0 home defeat to Fulham in which they produced only nine touches inside the box across the entire second half. Coventry are not yet cut adrift, however, sitting just three points behind 13th-placed Bournemouth, though a run of fixtures against five of the division’s bottom nine clubs over the next two months looms as a defining stretch of their season.

Coventry City team news

Haji Wright, Luke Woolfenden, Josh Eccles and Aurele Amenda are all unavailable through injury. The bigger worry is centre-back Bobby Thomas, who has started every Coventry league match so far this season but was withdrawn after an hour at Fulham; Lampard has said he does not yet know the extent of the problem. Stephen Mfuni looks the likeliest replacement alongside Ethan Pinnock if Thomas fails a late fitness test, with Matt Grimes and Frank Onyeka screening the defence from midfield.

Taiwo Awoniyi will be hoping to open his Premier League account for the club in what would be his fourth league start, while Jack Rudoni, who has scored twice in his last three top-flight outings, is looking to make it three goals in four games. Coventry have lost four of their five home matches this season, with five of their eight home goals conceded coming in September’s 5-0 defeat to Brighton.
