Coventry City host Sunderland in the Premier League at the Coventry Building Society Arena on Saturday.
The fixture pits the division’s bottom two against each other, with Frank Lampard’s Coventry 19th on six points and Regis Le Bris’s Sunderland 20th on five, just a single point separating the sides. Coventry have lost their last two league matches, most recently a 1-0 home defeat to Fulham, while Sunderland have taken only one point from their last 15 available in the league, a run broken only by a goalless draw with Leeds United.
Both clubs enter in markedly better spirits in the cups, however: Coventry beat Newcastle United and Nottingham Forest in successive league matches before their slump, and Sunderland advanced to the EFL Cup quarter-finals in midweek with a 3-2 win over Brentford.

Team news
Coventry City
Lampard’s injury list has grown steadily, with Haji Wright (quad), Luke Woolfenden (knee), Josh Eccles (ankle) and Aurele Amenda (calf) all unavailable. The bigger concern, though, is Bobby Thomas, the centre-back who has started every Coventry league match this season but was withdrawn an hour into the defeat at Fulham; Lampard has admitted he does not yet know the extent of the problem.
Should Thomas fail to recover in time, Stephen Mfuni is the likely replacement alongside Ethan Pinnock, with Matt Grimes and Frank Onyeka expected to shield the back line from midfield. Taiwo Awoniyi is still searching for his first Premier League goal for the club after three league starts, while Jack Rudoni, with two goals in his last three top-flight appearances, will look to continue that scoring form from an attacking midfield role.
Sunderland
Dan Ballard and Romaine Mundle remain long-term absentees, and Le Bris also faces a cluster of fresh fitness calls: Wilson Isidor, Jocelin Ta Bi, Omar Alderete, Juan Angulo and Nordi Mukiele are all carrying knocks picked up in recent weeks. Alderete’s situation is the most pressing — he was substituted during the win over Brentford after an opponent’s arm caught him in the face rather than through a muscular problem, and is expected to be given every chance to prove his fitness before kick-off.
Should he pass a late test, he is likely to partner Luke O’Nien at centre-back with Ballard still sidelined. Granit Xhaka is a certain starter in midfield, and Brian Brobbey is in contention to lead the line ahead of Habib Diarra, who would instead operate just behind him.
Form
Coventry City
Coventry have struggled badly at home, losing four of their five matches at the Coventry Building Society Arena this season and failing to score in three of those. Five of the eight goals they have conceded on home soil came in a single 5-0 defeat to Brighton & Hove Albion in September. With just three points separating them from 13th-placed Bournemouth, Lampard’s side are not yet cut adrift, though they face five of the division’s bottom nine clubs across their next eight fixtures.
Sunderland
Sunderland’s Premier League form has been among the division’s worst, with one point taken from a possible 15, but they have performed far better in Europe, winning twice and drawing once in three Europa League matches, and in the EFL Cup, where Wednesday’s win over Brentford sent them into the quarter-finals. Their away record in the league is winless this season (W0 D1 L3), and they have won only one of their six away matches in all competitions.
Predicted lineups
Coventry City possible starting XI (4-2-3-1): Rushworth; Van Ewijk, Mfuni, Pinnock, Dasilva; Grimes, Onyeka; Thomas-Asante, Rudoni, Mason-Clark; Awoniyi
Sunderland possible starting XI (4-2-3-1): Roefs; Mukiele, O’Nien, Alderete, Reinildo; Sadiki, Xhaka; Rigg, Diarra, Angulo; Brobbey
